Eight years ago I hooked up with Spin Master Toys as Creative Lead. I made the jump in-house, after a decade art directing at premier ad agencies, because Spin gave me the opportunity to write branded entertainment for YouTube.

Marketing toys means telling stories where kids spend time...which is on new media. Traditional advertising doesn't work there, but entertainment does. Which begs the question, why should what we create as marketers be a parasite to something else? Why can't what we create be a new media destination? 

Well, it can. Branded entertainment is the answer. It's an approach that's natural, honest, and empowering. It's the kind of marketing that makes me feel comfortable as a parent—and as a creative, it's more fun to make because it allows the storytelling to be so much richer.

Like I said, your kids taught me everything worth knowing about the future of marketing—and that is that our radars for BS are so finely calibrated that the brand stories we tell going forward have to be extraordinary. The have to be entertaining. They have to be branded entertainment.

As a creative, that's incredibly exciting.
